Thomas Handysyde Perkins was born in Boston, MA,
December 15th, 1764. His activity and talent soon placed him in
prosperous circumstances, and when he died he is supposed to have left a
property of some two millions, to be divided among his numerous heirs.
He began commercial life in partnership with his elder brother, James
Perkins, constituting the first American firm engaged in the China
trade. They embarked extensively in the Northwest Coast, Can___, and
Calcutta trade, in which they acquired great wealth. During the War of
1812 he was distinguished, in connection with Otis and Sullivan, as
strenuous opponent of Mr. Madison's Administration, and was cleaved by
the Federals to several important posts in the State and National
Government. He was a man of public spirit and great liberality in money
matters, and several of the most splendid charitable institutions are
monuments of his munificence. He was not, however, without the hobbies
which often accompany such a generous attributes. Col. Perkins enjoyed
an iron constitution, which held out nobly against the gout and other
infirmities of his old age, to which he has at length yielded. His death
will be sincerely mourned by the public as well as his immediate
acquaintances. |
