Farmers Herald -St. Johnsbury, VT - March 4th, 1830 ~ STANDSTEAD ~ Melancholy Occurrence - On Wednesday, the 24th of February, as Mr. Peter Little, Silas Mac, and CHANDLER PERKINS were felling timber for a Mill Dam near Mack's Mills in this town, having calculated to fall a spruce and a cedar at the same time and in the same direction, they had partly chopped the cedar, when they observed a small dry ash leaning against its limbs which they expected would fall in contrary direction. Mr. Little pointed out the way for each to go to clear themselves, and Mr. Mack while all three were chopping the cedar twice said we must look out for that ash or it will be down upon us - the cedar began to fall and Mr. Little ran off in a different course from what he had before calculated and the ash striking him on the forehead killed him instantly. Mr. Little aged 49, was esteemed by his neighbors as a kind obliging, useful and industrious man, (being a Wheel Wright). He has left a widow and thirteen children to mourn their loss. _______________________________________
