PHILIP PERKINS - Founder of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Wyoming - By E. M. Perkins

While I have no personal record or direct family information that Philip Perkins, the 2nd, my paternal grand father, was one of the founders of the Methodist Episcopal church of Wyoming, the centenary of which is being observed this day, the subsequent connection of the family with the church leads me to believe he was thus associated.

Philip Perkins the 2d was the son of Philip Perkins and the grandson of Charles Perkins. Charles Perkins was a descendant, fifth in line of Mary Allerton who came with her parents from England on the Mayflower when she was 11 years of age. Philip Perkins the 1st was born in Bridgewater, Mass, in 1770, and was married in Boston, Dec. 3rd, 1790, to Sarah Gibson. The record I have does not give the date of their removal to Wyoming but it recites that he died Aug. 20th, 1847, and that the death of his widow was on April 25th, 1850. They are buried in Owasso, Michigan, and it is presumable their deaths took place there, where some of their children had established homes. Charles Perkins died at the home of his son, Philip Perkins the first, in Middlebury, NY in 1828 and he was buried in the cemetery at Wright's Corners. Philip Perkins the 2d was one of ten children born to Philip and Sarah Gibson Perkins, six sons and four daughters. I do not know whether he was born in Massachusetts or in Middlebury, and do not have the date of his marriage to Cynthia Woodworth. To Philip Perkins the 2nd and his wife were born nine children as follows: Nancy Perkins, Chauncey Perkins, Otis Perkins, Lyman Perkins, Polly Perkins, Sally Perkins, Phylena Perkins, Jane Perkins and Olin Perkins. Chauncey Perkins was my father. Nancy Perkins became the wife of the late John Ridge and they lived for many years on the farm now owned by Charles A. Lamb, who married their daughter Kate Ridge. Polly Perkins married Ruben Rogers and their home for many years was in the home a few doors east of the present church now occupied I believe by Mrs. A. W. Hubbard. Jane Perkins married Clark Merritt and it is to their daughter, Mrs. Jennie Shurtz I am indebted for much of the family history in my possession.

I remember very well Mr. and Mrs. Ridge, also Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. Of the other uncles and aunts, most of whom migrated to the west, I only recall Otis Perkins, who came to visit at our home when I was a young lad. I have a suspicion this recollection was fostered by a silver dollar he gave me upon his departure. In later years Mother told me that for some time following his leaving I use to frequently ask her when he was coming again. Father and mother both attended the Methodist church, though I believe mother retained her membership in the Presbytrian church, her family have been of that faith. Aunt "Polly" Rogers was a devout Methodist, but "Aunt Nancy" Ridge followed her husband to the Presbyterian church. I have very distant recollections of the old Methodist church and many of its people.
