1910- July 27th - The Post Standard -
Syracuse , New York Canastota, NY: Captain Reuben Perkins founder of Canastota, NY, was born in Connecticut in 1761 coming to the vicinity of Quality Hill, west of this village in 1805, where he lived until 1810 in which year the Captain purchased the Canastota reservation of 320 2-10 acres. Indian titles had to be passed through the state, and in that year a law was passed authorizing the sale of the Canastota reservation to Captain Perkins. Of six daughters and two sons by his first wife, one daughter married Sylvester Clark, one Warren Corton, one William Jennings, one George B. Rowe, and another Thomas Menzie. Mr. Menzie holds the distinction of building the first frame house in Canastota in 1817 at the corner of South Main and Center Streets, which has since been replaced by the residence of Dr. J. W. Knapp. Grandchildren of Captain Perkins who still live and, will have a place of honor in to-morrow's centennial parade, are George Rand, A. E. Perkins, Miss Julia Perkins, who first suggested the centennial celebration, and Mrs. J. C. Warrwick. In writing of the life of Captain Perkins, the late Thomas Barlow said; "His early home made a deep impression upon his mind inasmuch that a few years before he died, which was in 1855, when 64 years of age, he fancied that it was all still his and he was to repossess it again". Continuing, Mr. Barlow wrote, "I hope his portrait may be placed as an exhibit in some public place in our village for awhile at least, that our people of this generation may see how the old patriot looked, who was the first "landlord" of the land we now enjoy as the home of the civilized redeemed from the wilderness of the benighted children of of nature. " Mr. Barlow's wish in this regard has been realized, for the public library a painting of the likeness of Captain Perkins adorns the walls. The painting was copied by E. G. Barlow, a son of Thomas Barlow, in 1903 from an old portrait of Captain Perkins, painted in 1832, and was presented to the library in 1903 by F. L. Perkins, deceased, Mrs. Warrwick and Miss Julia Perkins, grandchildren of the Captain. ___________________
