1888: June 22nd - St Lawrence Courier Potsdam, NY

EDWARDS, NY

On Sunday last, funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dr. J. S. Lee in the Union Church in memory of four sisters who had died within three months. In Heuvelton, NY March 14th, Mrs. Jane W., wife of the late Thomas Thompson, died March 14th, aged 72 years. In Edwards, NY, at the residence of her brother A.H. Perkins, died June 2nd, Miss Roxana W. Perkins, aged 74 years. At the same place, June 6th, died Mrs. Diana W. Healey, widow of the late Jabez Healey, of Potsdam, aged 78 years. In Edwards, NY, village, June 14th, died Mrs. Susan McCargen, wife of the late Robert McCargen, aged 70 years. They were the daughters of Wm. H. Perkins, formerly of Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., NY. One sister and three brothers survive: Mrs. Joseph Brown, of Russell, NY; Solon A. Perkins, of Pierpont, NY; John P. Perkins, of Oshkosh, WI and A. H. Perkins, of Edwards, NY. The deaths of these four sisters are remarkable instances of mortality. They were between the ages of 70 and 80, and three of them died within three weeks and all four within three months. They were all excellent woman, highly esteemed in the communities where they lived. Mrs. McCargen was born in Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., NY in 1810, married Robert McCargen, a native of the Island of Magee, Ireland, who came to this country at the age of 21 years and died in Edwards, NY, respected and lamented, April 23rd, 1877. His wife was intelligent, generous in her feelings and charitable in her deeds who lived and died a genuine Christian. On the occasion of the funeral the church was crowded and great were the manifestations of sorrow by the friends and neighbors who were in attendance. The display of flowers was profuse and gorgeous, even little children formed wreaths in memory of this good woman whom they loved as a faithful friend.

Dec.30th: Mrs. Clarissa H. Perkins, died, relict of John L. Perkins. She was the mother of Mrs. Theodore H. Swift of Parishville, NY.

Mr. Don (Donald) F. Perkins of Parishville, NY, who was born May 18th, 1821, says his most famous horse was a pacer named "Jager" and lived to be 28 years of age.

April 16th: Mr. Don (Donald) Frank Perkins, died. He was born in New Hampshire on May 18th, 1821 and died in Parishville, NY. He was of a family of 11 children, the 10th child born. He came to Parishville, NY 77 years ago. He lived on the home farm 60 years. Of two children born, Fanny Perkins, a daughter, died in infancy and their son Edson Perkins survives.

July 18th: Mrs. Thirza Ann Perkins, 81, died. She was born in Essex Co., NY. Early in life she came to Parishville, NY and later resided with her son, E. M. Perkins.

Feb.9th: Mr. Jesse Elmer Perkins, died. He married Catharine Garvey, daughter of Wm. Garvey. His wife did not live very long and left a son, Jesse C. Perkins, who lived with his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Garvey. He married a 2nd time, and leaves a widow and three children, Jesse Perkins, Albert Perkins and Mildred Perkins.

June 3rd: The marriage of Miss Margaret Mullen to Mr. George J. Perkins will be solemnized on June 3rd. 1909.

Sept. 13th: Mrs. Sarah (Webb) Perkins, 91, died. She was one of the oldest, if not the oldest resident of our town. She was born in Malone, NY, the youngest of five children of Oliver and Sally Webb, who were early settlers of Malone, NY. In 1844 she married Mr. Isaac E. Perkins of Parishville, St. Lawrence Co., NY. No children were born of this union. Fannie Webb came to live with them at the age of 10, and with her children, Frank & Myrtle Schellenger, spent her life here taking the place of a daughter. Ezra Parker, son of Eleazer Parker, became a member of their household when just a boy. On July 8th, 1881, Mr. Perkins died suddenly in the hayfield.

Mrs. Parna (Bicknell) Irish, died, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. (Hosea) Perkins where she had been making her home. She was born in Vermont in 1822, daughter of Ralph Bicknell who moved west to Parishville, NY when she was a small child. She m. William Irish 60 some years ago. She leaves three sons, Elifus Irish, William Irish, Oscar Irish, and two daughters, Mrs. Hosea Perkins of Colton, NY and Mrs. Roseltha Perkins of Brookline, MA, and two sisters, Mrs. Laura McDonald of Potsdam, NY and Mrs. Marshaline Smith of Parishville, NY.

Feb. 18th: Mr. Azro Perkins, died. He drove to the sawmill with a load of logs and on the way home he was seen to fall from his sled. His wife died very suddenly last years while on her way to Joe Indian Lake last summer.

Feb. 28th: Mr. Leonard B. Perkins, died, at his home in Springfield, MO. Mr. Perkins was born March 12th, 1840, son of Cyrus G. and Martha A. (Barnes) Perkins who at the time of Mr. Perkins birth, lived at Parishville,  NY. He is survived by his widow and son James Perkins, a brother Judge Fred D. Perkins and his sister, Mrs. Martha A. (Perkins) Grennon, both of whom live at Woodstock, ILL. Their son James Perkins was born in Baltimore, MD in 1865. In 1874 they moved to Illinois and to Springfield, MO in 1880 where he established the Perkins Hotel. He retired four years ago in favor of his son.

Mrs. Merian Cordelia (Matthews) Perkins, died. She was born in 1848 at Ausable Forks, NY, five miles from Redford, Clinton Co., NY, daughter of Loten and Cordelia Matthews. On Aug. 14th, 1868 she married Ralph C. Perkins of Parishville, NY. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. J.O. Joyce and Miss Anna Perkins and one brother, Charles Matthews.

Mrs. Mary (Perkins) Swift, widow of Judge Theodore H. Swift, died. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. & Clarissa H. Perkins. She was born on Feb. 24th, 1850. She married Judge T. Swift on July 5th, 1871. She is survived by one son, H. H. Swift.

Jan. 5th: Mrs. Martha (Perkins) Grennon,87, of Chicago, IL, died. She was the daughter of Cyrus G. and Augusta (Barnes) Perkins, and a sister of the late Mrs. Waldo W. Wilson of Potsdam, NY. Her husband Miles Grennon died thirty-five years ago at Marengo, IL. She is survived by two sons and a half-brother, Mr. Fred Perkins of Woodstock, IL, a nephew Dr. William H. Wilson and a niece Mrs. Benjamin M. Kip of Canton, NY.

March 4th: Mrs. Martha A. Perkins, widow of Edson A. Perkins, former Potsdam banker, died, at the home of her son, Francis L. Perkins. Mrs. Perkins was the daughter of Justin and Emily (Belding) Long, and was born on Sept. 2nd, 1843 at Colton, NY. On May 26th, 1880 she married Edson Perkins of Parishville, NY. Her son is the only survivor.

Mrs. Samuel Perkins, died. Mrs. Cynthia (Bartlett) Perkins was born at South Colton, NY in 1864, daughter of Hiram and Sarah Bartlett. She married Samuel Perkins 42 years ago. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Delbert Conway of Hewittville, NY, Mrs. Frank Brown of Brasher Falls, NY and Mrs. Harley Chapman of Hewittville, NY, one son William Perkins of Hewittville, NY and two sisters, Mrs. William Keys and Mrs. Frank Dennis.

Mrs. Sloma (Perkins) Lucas, died. She was born Aug. 16th, 1858, one of five children of Mr. and Mrs. John Perkins and was the last of the family. She was married to S. O. Lucas on Aug. 26th, 1877 and to them were born 7 children. She is survived by three sons, Homer Lucas, Howard Lucas and Floyd Lucas.

Jan. 21st: Mrs. Jennie (Perkins) Trerise, died. Widow of David J. Trerise, at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jeremy Ford. She was born in this town on Oct. 18th, 1853, daughter of Ralph & Rachel (Allen) Perkins. On Nov. 2nd, 1871 she married David J. Trerise and had five children, Mayfred Trerise, Mrs. Jeremey Ford, William Trerise who died young, Fern Trerise, Irving Trerise and Jessie Trerise.

Jan. 25th: Mrs. Eva (Perkins) Fuller, observed her 80th Birthday on Saturday. Mrs. Fuller was born Jan. 25th, 1861 at Ogdensburg, NY, daughter of William and Malina (Robinson) Perkins. She married Lewis Fuller on Dec. 7th, 1886 at Potsdam, NY.

Mrs. Emmeline (Smith) Marriott, 84, died, wife of Wm. Marriott. She was born in Vermont 84 years ago. She was twice married, her first husband was Amos Perkins. She is survived by her husband, two brothers, Dean Smith of Reese, MI and Roy I. Smith of Cumberland, MD, and one sister, Mrs. Florence Smith of Zanesville, OH.

He is survived by his wife the former Miss Adeline Randall, one son, Robert Perkins, and two sisters, Mrs. Harley (Deva) Chapman of Norfolk, NY and Mrs. Mabel Brofun of Potsdam, NY.

Perkins Oct. 28th, 1904. She is survived by her husband and three sons, Hugh Perkins, Frederick Perkins & Lawrence Perkins and 8 grand-children'

He is survived by his wife, one son, Hazen B. Perkins Jr. of Potsdam, NY and one daughter, Mrs. Muriel Davis. Three brothers, Frank Perkins of Potsdam, NY and Harry Perkins of Massena, NY. One sisters, Mrs. Katherine Morgan of Potsdam, NY and three half-brothers, Ray Bradish, Willard Bradish and Sevey Bradish.

Mrs. Margaret (Mullin) Perkins, 51, died. Widow of George J. Perkins. She was born Oct. 15th, 1889 at Potsdam, NY, daughter of Thomas & Kate (Hurley) Mullin. She married George J. Perkins on June 2nd, 1909. She is survived by her mother and five daughters, Marjorie Perkins, Ruth Perkins, Irene Perkins, Lois Perkins and Katherine Perkins, and five sons, Robert Perkins, Bernard Perkins, Lawrence Perkins , Kenneth Perkins and Lloyd Perkins.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, Richard Perkins of Crary's Mills, NY, Wales Perkins of Potsdam, NY and Frank E. Perkins II of Rochester, NY and a daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Bernetta) Mason of Ithaca, NY.
