The family of the late Asa Perkins, consisting of seven children is quite remarkable one, in the fact that the seven children are all living, the oldest being eighty and the youngest sixty-two. Asa Perkins Sr, was married to Martha Esten, in 1824, at Dudley, Mass, and soon after moved to this town, locating on the Esten farm and five years later to the old homestead farm, about a mile east of DeLand's corners. Here they lived for over fifty years and reared a family of seven children. Mr. Perkins died in 1892 and his wife three years later, after having lived together for sixty-seven years. The seven children, all of whom are living are: Jane E. Mende of Akron; Mrs. Mary Atwood of Alexander; Asa F. Perkins of Fairport, NY; Samuel F. Perkins of  Batavia, NY; Martha M. Witter of Cuyler, NY; Mrs. Peter VanLeeren and Mrs. W. H. Jerrells of Fairport, NY, in order named, the oldest being eighty and the youngest sixty-two. The combined ages amount to 506 years. When Mr. Perkins, Sr., came to Fairport, NY, there was but one store here and very few buildings in Rochester, NY. New London, CT: Sept. 26th - The New London County Historical Society has acquired the famous Shaw Manor situated on Bank street in the old Connecticut town that is so famous for its association with the stirring events of the Revolution. During that period the Shaw Manor was the naval office of the Continental Congress, and its owner, Nathaniel Shaw Jr, the confidential friend and trusted ally of Gov. Trumbull and George Washington, who was several times his guest. The Manor has been sold and deeds given, and on July 1st, it passed into the possession of the society. Jane Richard Perkins, who sold it, is the last of the old Shaw stock with the exception of a niece. Her brother, Shaw Perkins, died a short time ago, and she was weary of living alone and keeping up the manor as it should be. The price paid for the mansion was $33,000. To the credit of the people of New London, the sum was raised by public and private subscriptions in less than two months and a half. The Historical Society is now making a few changes, preparatory to taking possession. Hitherto the organization has been cramped in a few rooms, and has had no place in which to store its collection of old manuscripts, swords, pictures, and other historical possessions.

Her life so beautifully given in its untiring and unselfish devotion to her home and family, speaks for her the finest eulogy and needs no other. She was laid to rest "amid flowers and evergreens" on the balmy autumn afternoon of November 1st. Rev. Breshears of the M. E. church officiating.

1915: Oct. 16th - The Livingston Republican - Geneseo, NY.

Mr. Miles Perkins died at 9:15 o'clock on Wednesday morning, Oct. 8th. His death occurred in Dundee , Yates Co., NY, at the home of Mrs. Miller, a sister of his first wife who was Jane Simonson of Steuben county and to whom he was married about 1860. To them was born one son, Walter Perkins, and he was taken in infancy by his grandparents in Steuben County, after his mother's death, and reared by them. He died in 1904 or 1905 and left a widow and two daughters, all of whom are living. Miles Perkins was the son of John H. Perkins who died at the age of 100 years. About 1875 Miles Perkins was married again to Mrs. Lucy Phillips who died some years since. The most of the eighty-three years of Mr. Perkins life was spent in the town of Leicester, his father having located there in an early day. Miles Perkins was born in the town of Geneseo, near the Genesee river, just east of the Caylerville bridge, on the north side of the roadway. The Perkins farm, where Miles was born, skirts the Genesee river on the opposite side from where Miles was reared. No man knew "The Valley" better than he. Every bend in the river was familiar to him, for in his younger days he hunted much along the river and shot otter, mink and muskrat; also quail, woodcock and snipe. He was an expert hunter and marksman, and for years loved the sport. Miles Perkins was the last of six sons who grew to manhood. His brother, Warren Perkins, died in Andersonville prison. There are three sisters living, Mrs. Cole of Michigan, Mrs. Frances Woodruff of Lakeville, NY, and Miss Alice Perkins who makes her home with Mrs. Woodruff. "It is appointed unto men" - unto all men - "once to die". Miles lived to a ripe old age, having passed the "three score and ten" limit by thirteen years. Mr. Perkins was a kind hearted man, a good neighbor and valued friend, and will be missed by many. There was no place to him like his childhood home and during the last few years of his life, he made frequent visits to the scenes and happenings of other days. For some months he had been gradually failing and while on a visit to Dundee he became worse, and for six days his heart grew weaker day by day till the end came and he closed his eyes in death. The funeral was at the home of Mrs. Woodruff and conducted by George K. Ward, the pastor of the Presbyterian church of Lakeville, assisted by Rev. C. F. Clutter of the U. P. church of Coylerville. The burial was at Mr. Pleasant near Lakeville and took place on Friday Oct. 10th at 2 p.m.. Beautiful and appropriate wreaths from relatives and friends were resting on the casket which was borne to the place of interment by Clyde P. Woodruff, Lloyd S. Hanna, Frank S. Rosand, B. Scott Gilbert.

1917: Aug. 29th - Jefferson County Journal - Jefferson Co., New York

George W. Perkins.  The Lakeview, Michigan, in its issue of Aug. 9th, 1917 says:

George Washington Perkins passed from this life at 7:10 p.m. Aug. 1st, 1917, at his home in Lakeview, Michigan, aged 97 years, 1 month and 8 days. The following was written by Geo. W. Perkins, July 15th, 1901, marked "To Dora and Jesse when I am gone."

I, Geo. W. Perkins, was born June 24th, 1820, in the town of Rutland, Jefferson Co., N.Y. Was reared in said county, and at the age of twenty-five married to Miss Rhoda C. Ackerman, of Pillar Point, town of Brownville, Jefferson Co., N.Y. , and whose father was one of the pioneer Methodist preachers of that county. To this union were born seven children, five sons and two daughters. They all grew to manhood and womanhood in the same school district where their parents first met. In the war of 1862, I was among the volunteers that responded to the call of my country. I enlisted in the 10th New York Heavy Artillery, consequently the greater part of the time was spent in defense of Washington, D.C. I was present at Lincoln's second inauguration; was in Washington on duty at the time of his assassination and attended his funeral. The officer that led the squad that captured the assassin, commanded the post where I was on duty. I was discharged in Washington, D.C., at the close of the war, June 23rd, 1865, and reached home July 6th, making three years service. I was present at the grand review in Washington at the close of the war and saw the tattered flags of the two armies. Soon after the war my eldest son had found out that the world was bigger than the place where we lived, and I did not try to make him believe different. Michigan seemed the place of greatest attraction at the time so they commenced with the oldest, to drop out, one at a time, until they were all in Michigan except two, one of these having been born after the war. All had made Saginaw their first stopping place and for years I had been warmly entreated to come to Michigan. The boys had been to a great extent, employed on what was then the D. L. & N. Railroad, and as new openings presented themselves, they followed the terminal to Lakeview, and with one exception, had settled there previous to 1884. Being often solicited and feeling lonely, I came to the conclusion that I would try Michigan, and in the spring of 1884, May 12, at noon, myself, wife and youngest son had our tickets from Lowville, N.Y., to Lakeview, Michigan, which place we reached the 13th at 6 p.m. It has been my permanent home up to this time. Notwithstanding the most serious heartrending happenings of all my life have taken place during these seventeen years, I have been well pleased with the country, and have formed some as pleasant acquaintances as in all my life. I have always felt satisfied not to look for a better home in this world. Speaking of some of the things that sealed my attachment to this place, was when the first break was made in the ranks of my family. It is well remembered the fatal boiler explosion here July 20th, 1892, with three killed outright. Oh, was a breach in an unbroken family - one of the noblest boys the sun ever shone on, and our main attraction to Michigan. My wife, being in poor health, never recovered from the shock, and in just six months to the day the dearest earthly tie left me to go to a better place above. Her ashes rest in our pleasant little cemetery, where I expect to lie when I pass to meet them, where our stay will not be transient. Since then my youngest daughter came from the east and was with me about one and a half years when she died and was taken east for burial. So I parted from them all. I have a hope of meeting them where the weary are forever at rest. I came here to be with my children but there has been years where I was the only one left here bearing the name. What is left of my family is scattered east, west and north, while I still retain my position as a family and am trying to have my report ready so when the roll is called up yonder, I can say, here I am. --- Geo. W. Perkins
