  D.N.A FACTS

I would like to introduce you to a new idea in Genealogy research. The idea is the Perkins Family DNA Study. The studies purpose is to match DNA samples submitted by individuals like yourself against one another based upon your known lineage. An example of how this works would be something like this.....

Person A:      Person A has researched their Perkins genealogy for 20 years and has come to a accurate conclusion through their research, vital statistics and documentary proof, that they are related to John Perkins, Esq. of Ipswich,MA who sailed to the America's in the 1600's on the ship Lyon with Roger Williams. There is no doubt what-so-ever in Person A's mind that this is true. Person A  decides to send in his DNA sample with his lineage chart that shows his knowledge as to why he believes he is related to John Perkins, Esq. of Ipswich, MA. He contacts the website host of this study from the Perkins DNA Study website (below) and is sent a DNA Sample Package. The DNA from Person A is then sent to the laboratory by themselves. The DNA arrives at the laboratory and a DNA specialist charts it and the information is then stored into a database set up for the surname of Perkins.

Person B:      Person B hears about the Perkins DNA study, and just like Person A, he has been researching his Perkins family for a number of years and his lineage chart is in order. He too has no doubt in his mind that he is related to John Perkins, Esq. of Ipswich,MA. He also sends for his DNA Sample Package from the Perkins DNA Study website and ships his DNA off to the Laboratory. The DNA sample of Person B is then charted, entered into the Perkins Family data base and is then matched against Person A's DNA. The Marker numbers from Person A and Person B are then put up at the Perkins DNA Website where we can see how closely they are related to one another or not.

FACTS

When DNA is charted, it ends up charted in a sequence of numbers or also referred to as markers. These markers are used to show a common genealogy connection with another person who submits DNA claiming the same lineage. There is a 12 marker test and a 25 marker test. The 25 marker test of course is the best, but it is also the most expensive. In my idea of Person A and Person B, they have chosen the 12 Marker test.

If Person A's markers and Person B's markers do not align they can opt. for the 25 marker test just to be sure. If after the 25 marker test they still do not match then this means that someone has the wrong lineage for themselves. At this point because there are only two submitters we are not sure who is wrong. So in must come a third person and more to determine the true DNA Makers of the family of John Perkins, Esq. of Ispwich,MA. The more people who participate the more accurate the database becomes and the easier it will be for future genealogists who submit after us giving them a better chance of learning their true lineage. If Person A and Person B markers do match then this sets a precedence for others after them who submit their DNA.

After a number of other matches to Person A and Person B the database then learns that the family of John Perkins,Esq. of Ipswich, MA has a particular set of marker numbers. All future tests submitted under the lineage of John Perkins, Esq. of Ipswich,MA will then be charted against these numbers.

This test is not limited to the family of John Perkins,Esq. of Ipswich,MA. Each Person who submits their DNA and chart, will be identified by the oldest PERKINS male listed on their lineage chart they submit along with their DNA sample. Let's say that your last known PERKINS male was a Earl Perkins b.1850 MI. You cannot go any further in your research because loss of documents. You submit your lineage chart as Earl Perkins being the last known (oldest) PERKINS male in your line. Your DNA is charted and added to the PERKINS DNA Database. Someone comes along who submits their lineage under the name of Richard Perkins of MD. You find out that your DNA Markers are a perfect match with this person. This will give you good reason to start looking for a connection for your Earl Perkins lineage within the family of Richard Perkins of MD.

Who can Participate in the Study

Sorry Ladies...,I must note that only male descendants of PERKINS families are encouraged to participate because the Y-Chromosome is only passed down from Father to Son. Men who wish to participate should meet this criteria , your a male and your father was a Perkins and his father was a Perkins and his father was a Perkins and so on and so forth all the way back to your last   PERKINS male in your chart. For accurate Y-DNA results your Perkins line SHOULD follow a male line back to your Perkins male original settler. In a somewhat harsh way of saying this, results of your Y-Dna test will not be accurate if someone from your line was a bastard child of a Perkins girl who never married, but who gave her child/children the name of PERKINS to you or to any of your ancestors. If this is a known fact in your lineage you are still welcomed to participate, but please make a note of this in your lineage chart. Before you submit with this as a known fact, please keep in mind that if you submit your Y-DNA under the above circumstances you may throw off the entire database and you will probably not match with anyone else in the study. Also be aware this can happen if you do submit without this being a known fact in your lineage. Please do not be shocked if your results do not match with anyone else in the study if this was a unknown fact to you prior to taking the test and be prepaired for it before you submit.

Recommendation

I urge all who read this to please participate in this study. Send in your Y-DNA samples to be charted against each other. We all live in this great modern world with technology advances and chances like this. Your Y-DNA is not tested for anything other then your Y Chromosome marker numbers. Your Y-DNA is not given to the government or any other third party. Please read more about it on Steve Perkins Perkins DNA Study website by clicking the link on the upper left.
