  Michigan Biographical Sketches

LEWIS R. PERKINS
Lewis R. Perkins b.9/16/1816 Cato, Cayuga Co., NY or Rochester, Monroe Co., NY.  Son of  (James & Mary (Legro) Perkins). His wife CATHERINE E. (CULVER\PULVER) b.1820 d.1846 MI (dau. of Simon & Sarah (Strong) Culver or Lyman and Sally (Strong) Culver). Sarah (Strong) Culver's family name was Payne and were of English Origin. They were married  March 19, 1846. In 1860 they are listed on the census at Alaiedon, Ingham Co., Michigan.

Lewis R. Perkins came to Michigan about 1836, traveled through the central part of the state, then lived out "West". His first land purchase in Michigan I find, was on April 24th, 1841 where he purchased land from *John W. Butterfield @ Section 34, Town 3, Range 14 in *Van Buren Co., MI. He then sold this parcel of land on Nov. 20, 1841 to Alson A. Greaves. The next parcel of land was purchased on June 1,1848 from the Ionia Land Office.
He first settled on the county line in *Henrietta, Jackson Co., MI. He is not listed on the 1840 MI Census but he was a Michigan Pioneer.

Lewis R. Perkins Grandfather was Capt. Joseph Perkins of NY who served in the Revolutionary War with his brother Capt. James Perkins, father of *Ira A. Perkins. His Grandfather Joseph Perkins enlisted at age 16 and served in the Rev. War as a bodyguard for Gen. George Washington. *This family once lived in Booneville, Ontario Co., NY and Conquest, Cayua Co., NY.

Lewis & Catherine (Culver\Pulver) Perkins later settled near Snyders Station, *Spring Arbor, Jackson Co., MI.

Their known children were:

1.Francis L. Perkins b.1.3.1847 Clinton Co., MI d.1925 Jackson Co., MI m. Susan M. (Ford)
2.Joseph Ezra Perkins b. 11.19.1858 or 11.17.1859 MI - d. 1.28.1900 Jackson, Jackson Co., MI < His MI Death Record states his parents were Lewis & Kate "Culver" Perkins. *History of Jackson Co., MI has it as "Pulver".

JOHN C. PERKINS
John C. Perkins b.1796 VT. His wife HANNAH SMITH (RUSSELL). John C. Perkins and family removed from New York to Susquehanna Co., PA by 1827. They were known to have lived at Erie Co., OH in 1830. By 1835 they were listed at Saybrook, Ashtabula Co., OH. They arrived in Michigan sometime around 1836-39 and are listed on the 1840 Michigan Census in Napoleon, Jackson Co., MI.

Their known children were:

1.Rowena Perkins b.1825 NY d. ? MI m. Christopher Purchase         < Perkins Research asks........ Where is Rowena (Perkins) Purchase buried - She died in MI prior to 1860. ?
2.William H. Perkins b. 1827 Susquehanna Co., PA m. 1st. Philinda (Knapp), 2nd. Mary E. (Hice)
3.Charles R. Perkins b.1830 Erie, PA m. Harriet (DuBois)
4.Annie P. Perkins b.7-4-1833 *Saybrook, Ashtabula Co., OH d.11.23.1901 MI m. John Stephen Cushman
5.Mary Perkins b.1836 OH or MI (never married)

*From the book "Pilgrims of the Fruit belt - A Cushman Genealogy", Annie (Perkins) Cushman told the author she was born at Saybrook, Susquehanna Co., PA. *She mixed her birth place in OH with her brothers birth place in PA.

Source: Annie P. (Perkins) Cushman Birth location - Book - Pilgrims of the fruit belt: A Cushman Genealogy by Martella L. Cushman (1980) *This author claims that they obtained her birth location from her death certificate. I have been unable to reproduce this fact. Her death certificate states that she was born in "Penn". It does not list a township.

 

SILAS G. PERKINS
Silas G. Perkins b.3.4.1812 Essex Co., VT d.1864 MI. His wife REBECCA (RICHARDSON) b.1812 ME. Silas G. Perkins arrived in the state of Michigan about 1836. They are listed on the 1840 Census at Napoleon, Jackson Co., MI and at Henrietta, Jackson Co., MI in 1850 & 1860. They resided in the state of New York before coming to Michigan.

Their known children were:
